Most of the nearly 220 public schools in Delaware are operated by one of the state’s 19 school districts. Charter schools account for 23 of the state’s public schools, approximately 13 percent of the public school population, which operate with more autonomy than district schools. Charter schools operate under a contract with an authorizer, either the state’s public education authority or a school district.
Schools chartered by a district have more autonomy than other district schools and are geographically located within their local district. Currently, any Delaware district can authorize charter schools. All state-chartered schools in Delaware are authorized by the state’s public education authority, the Delaware Department of Education with the assent of the State Board of Education. All of Delaware’s charter schools serve as their own Local Education Agency (LEA).
