Most of the nearly 295 public schools in Hawaii are operated by one statewide school district. Charter schools account for 37 of the state’s public schools, which operate with more autonomy than district schools. Charter schools operate under a contract with a statewide authorizer, which is the State Public Charter School Commission whose members are appointed by the State Board of Education. In addition, the law allows accredited public and private postsecondary institutions, county and state agencies, and nonprofits to apply to the state board of education to become an authorizer.
All state-chartered schools in Hawaii serve as their own Local Education Agency (LEA).
