The nearly 50 public charter schools in Maryland are operated by only eight of the 24 school districts. Charter schools educate almost 3% of the state’s public school students and operate with more autonomy than district schools.
Charter schools in Maryland operate under a contract with their authorizer, a public school district. Schools chartered by a district have more autonomy than other district schools, but are still part of their local district. Currently, any Maryland district can authorize charter schools upon approval from their local district or on an appeal, the state Board of Education. If the state Board of Education approves a charter school to open on the appeal, they are still contracted with their local district. Charter schools in Maryland do not serve as their own Local Education Agency (LEA).
