Most of the nearly 3,000 public schools in Michigan are operated by one of the state’s 539 school districts. While there are 368 charter schools in Michigan, they account for 295 of the state’s charter public school districts, which operate with more autonomy than traditional district schools. Charter schools operate under a contract with an authorizer, which can be a public university, community college, intermediate school district or a local traditional school district.
Currently, 19 Michigan traditional districts authorize charter schools. All state-chartered schools in Michigan serve as their own Local Education Agency (LEA).
