In New Mexico, there are nearly 900 public schools, most of which are operated by one of the 89 school districts. There are 97 public charter schools in 28 community locations with 23 unique models, ranging from Montessori to college prep, STEM to performing arts, project-based learning to dropout re-engagement, and more. These schools serve 20 percent of the state’s students, operating with more autonomy than district schools. Charter schools operate under a contract with an authorizer, either the Public Education Commission or a school district.
Schools chartered by a district have more autonomy than other district schools but are still part of their local district. Currently, 12 New Mexico districts authorize charter schools. All state-chartered schools in New Mexico are authorized by the Public Education Commission and serve as their own Local Education Agency (LEA).

“Having a school that is flexible, where art integration, project-based learning, [and] really thoughtful planning around what my student’s needs are is highly attractive for me as a parent.”
