Most of the nearly 2,500 public schools in North Carolina are operated by one of the state’s 120 school districts. Charter schools account for 202 of the state’s public schools, which operate with more autonomy than district schools.
Currently, only the State Board of Education can authorize charter schools. All state-chartered schools in North Carolina are authorized by the state’s public education authority and serve as their own Local Education Agency (LEA).
