Most of the nearly 1,700 public schools in Oklahoma are operated by one of the state’s 512 school districts. Charter schools account for 64 of the state’s public schools, with approximately 51,000 students enrolled in either a brick & mortar or virtual charter school. Charter schools operate under a contract with an authorizer, which includes any school district, a university or college that is a member of the Oklahoma State System of High Education, a community college, a technology center school, a federally recognized Indian tribe, the State Board of Education, or the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board

Charter schools have more autonomy than traditional district schools and are considered a separate Local Education Agency (LEA) for state and federal purposes. All state-chartered schools in Oklahoma are authorized by the State Board of Education and all statewide virtual charter schools are sponsored by the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board.

“My wife and I believe education is the key to achieving the American Dream. We believe that when a child is equipped with a quality education there is nothing he can’t do. Despite dismal statistics surrounding the quality of our state's public education system, we still believed our children could access the key to the American Dream right here in Oklahoma. That dream became a reality when we enrolled them in an Oklahoma public charter school.”
