Most of the nearly 2,200 public schools in Wisconsin are operated by one of the state’s 421 school districts. Charter schools account for 231 of the state’s public schools, which operate with more autonomy than district schools. Charter schools operate under a contract with an authorizer, which is a local school board of education, the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, chancellor of any institution in the University of Wisconsin System, each technical college district board, Waukesha County Executive College of Menominee Nation, Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University, the University of Wisconsin System, and the Office of Educational Opportunity.
Schools chartered by a district have some autonomy than other district schools but are still part of their local district. Currently, any Wisconsin district can authorize charter schools upon completion of state qualifications.
