The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools submitted an official comment letter to U.S. Department of Education’s Notice of Proposed Priorities, Requirements, Definitions, and Selection Criteria (NPP) for three components of the ED Charter Schools Program (CSP). Nina Rees, President and CEO, released the following statement:
“Public charter schools are an important part of the American education landscape serving 3.5 million students — two-thirds of whom are from low-income, Black, or Hispanic communities. Nearly 65% of all charter schools are single-site community-based schools, and the U.S. Department of Education’s proposed regulations are a direct attack on new schools like this. As thousands of public charter school supporters have said in comments to the department, and many media outlets have chronicled over the last month: make no mistake, this is a back-door attempt to prevent new charter schools from opening—contrary to the very purpose of the CSP.
“This is a sneak attack on charter schools that is politically motivated by special interests seeking to benefit the adults in the system and not the children and families in our country who are clamoring for better education opportunities. Why is the Biden Administration listening to everyone except families?”
