This blog post is part of our celebration of charter school graduates across the country and their achievements. Join us in celebrating our #CharterGrads!
My name is Alexandra Martinez and I have attended Synergy Academies since 2nd grade. Though I cannot be considered a lifer, I am very close to being one. My journey through the Synergy Academies has been a very exciting one!
My sister first enrolled in Synergy Charter Academy after a neighbor, concerned with the lack of resources that were available at the district elementary school near my home, told my family about a school she thought would give us more opportunities. Later, I soon followed. I have been on this journey of meeting new people and doing new things ever since. There have been so many opportunities. That is what I like about Synergy Academies.
So many memories come to mind when I think of my charter school experience. I have had the opportunity to learn new things about myself and strengthen skills I did not know I had. My charter school helped me to change aspects where I sought improvement and work with amazing, supportive teachers. Somewhere along the way, I discovered that it is not about how much you memorize but how much you truly understand that will get you through the difficult classes. It‘s about investing in yourself—I can succeed. Success is about the effort you put into it. It is not the destination. We all have goals. It is about what we learn and do along the way to reach that destination.
Since elementary I have worked hard to make my family proud as they have always supported me. When I walked across the stage to recieve my diploma, I looked forward to seeing my family cheer and smile in the crowd. When they looked at me, they knew that this is what I have worked for because of them.
This fall, I will begin classes at the University of California, San Diego. My goal is to major in psychology and minor in creative writing. Like so many other students, I hope to work to defray the cost of college. This will mean learning to balance work and school. After receiving my bachelor’s degree, my plan is to take a gap year and gain more experience in psychology. I also plan to start writing a book. After my gap year, I plan to pursue a master’s degree and continue to write.
