In a short amount of time, COVID-19 has changed the way we live. The term social distancing is a new norm—and families around the world are forced to adapt to new routines. While the lives of many have changed significantly, one thing that has remained consistent is the drive of school leaders and teachers to continue serving their students the best way they can. Despite the problems many Americans are facing, there are many examples that show how educators are going the extra mile.
Charter Schools Prep Students for AP Exam Online
College Board’s Advanced Placement State Exams will be offered online for students to take at home this year. The Uncommon Schools network, consisting of four charter high schools in Brooklyn, New York, is keeping their commitment to prepare students. Just one day after the schools closed, teachers shifted to online learning. Before closing, staff members handed out 1,400 Chromebooks and 50 hotspots to help parents and students with the transition. More than 90 percent of students are showing up for class online each day. Parents Appreciate Charter Schools Stepping Up
HEROES. This is how many parents are describing educators as they demonstrate their academic commitment to students during the pandemic. One parent who is serving on the frontline had this to say:
“I work at a hospital and many of my coworkers are so stressed, already, with this pandemic, but also stressing about their children and their education. I tell you, I cannot say enough about HSA Belmont charter school and all you guys are doing for these kids. My daughter, Mia, and I have never been more proud to be Eagles. As a nurse, YOU guys are my heroes.”
Her daughter attends Horizon Science Academy Belmont in Chicago. Watch the school’s touching “We Are One” Message here. Another pleased parent in New York acknowledged the dedication of teachers, and said she feels like her “…son is a part of a community that cares about his education.” She continued to praise educators for jumping online to continue teaching ensuring students are not missing a beat.
