WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Alliance issued a statement following the passage of a new charter school law in West Virginia:
“The National Alliance congratulates West Virginia on the significant improvements made to its public charter school law with the signing of HB 2012 by Governor Justice. These much-needed changes included the addition of an independent authorizer to hear charter applications, as well as the creation of an appeals process for authorizer decisions to be reviewed by the West Virginia State Board of Education. These changes will support the creation of high-quality public charter schools through clear authorizing pathways and transparent application processes. The law also creates operating parameters for virtual public charter schools. While we have concerns with the high enrollment cap for virtual charter schools, we look forward to working with the State Board of Education and the State Department of Education to ensure that virtual charter schools are providing quality options to West Virginia families.”
