Washington D.C. – Today, the Administration released its proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 budget, which includes a request for $500 million in funding for the Charter Schools Program (CSP). The CSP is the federal program that enables the creation of new charter schools and the replication and expansion of existing, high-quality charter schools.
National Alliance President and CEO Nina Rees released the following statement:
“The President’s proposed funding for the CSP is appreciated by the entire charter school community, especially the estimated 5 million students waiting to attend a charter school. In particular, we are pleased to see the Administration’s request to reserve up to $100 million for charter school facilities funding, which will help address the significant challenges that public charter schools often face in acquiring, improving, and expanding their facilities.
Although charter schools are public schools, they are frequently unable to access public buildings, and often cannot leverage the same financing tools as district public schools. These limitations create significant barriers to the growth and expansion of high-quality charter schools that the President’s new proposed funding can help solve.”
