Rees Congratulates Midterm Election Winners, Sees Opportunities for Charter School Movement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools President and CEO Nina Rees released the following statement on the results of the 2018 midterm elections:

“We congratulate the newly elected and re-elected officials across the country. As these federal, state, and local officials turn their attention from campaigning to governing, we urge them to strengthen and support the vital role of public charter schools in our nation’s education system.

“Public charter school supporters are excited to work with the new governors in a number of states, such as Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, as well as returning governors in several states, like Alabama, Arizona, Iowa, Nebraska, New York, and Rhode Island, to advance policies that support charter schools and the public school students who attend them. As governors and state legislators begin to set priorities for the 2019 sessions, we hope their agendas demonstrate that they are champions for kids.

“As Democrats assume control of the House of Representatives, we look forward to building on a long history of bi-partisan, bi-cameral support for charter schools as part of the larger effort to ensure that every family has access to a public school that best meets the needs of their students. We look forward to working with Congress to ensure that any infrastructure bill benefits all public school students.

“For almost three decades, charter schools have had bipartisan support. During this time, we have made great strides in the growth of public charter schools, yet today there are still more than five million additional students who would attend a charter school if one were available to them. Until every student has access to a high-quality education, our work is far from done.”
