Rees Congratulates Newly Elected State Officials, Sees Opportunities for Charter Schools

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools President and CEO Nina Rees released the following statement on the results of the 2020 elections:

“We congratulate the newly elected and re-elected officials from states across the country, and we are thrilled to see several charter school supporters among the ranks. This election has been characterized as the most consequential in our lifetimes, and it is notable that voters in state and local elections overwhelmingly chose candidates – both incumbents and challengers – who support charter schools.

We look forward to working with the new and returning governors, especially those in Montana, North Dakota and Vermont – three of the five remaining states without a charter school law – as well as those in Indiana, New Hampshire and Utah. As all governors and state legislators begin to set priorities for the 2021 sessions, we hope they unveil student-centered education agendas. The pandemic has forced millions of families across America to seek alternatives to what district schools are offering. Families need governors, state legislators, state education chiefs, and school board members to expand access to public school options. Charter schools, which are public, tuition-free schools, should be one of those options.

We also look forward to working with our allies in Congress, including newly elected Senator Hickenlooper (D-CO) who is a strong charter school supporter. We are proud to count him among the Congressional leaders committed to ensuring these innovative public schools have the resources that they need to keep students learning during the pandemic and beyond.

Today more than five million students await a chance to attend a charter school. Until every student has access to a high-quality education, our work is far from done.”
