“We applaud Representative Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), along with 224 other House Members and 35 other Senators, who introduced the Justice in Policing Act of 2020.
The Justice in Policing Act is a comprehensive effort to change the overly aggressive law enforcement practices that persist and are sanctioned in this country. This sweeping legislation proposes common-sense steps to achieve long-lasting, structural change to stop the ongoing practice of police brutality and racial injustice, including banning chokeholds, ending racial profiling, establishing a National Police Misconduct Registry, and demilitarizing the police.
The pattern of unarmed and nonviolent black people in America being killed at the hands of law enforcement is impossible to ignore. The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools condemns this behavior. The students and families we serve are disproportionately represented in the very communities where these patterns persist. Their lives matter. And we believe legislation that protects them is long overdue.
We also look forward to working with Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) on his legislation and appreciate his support for many of these measures.”
