The Virtual National Charter Schools Conference Kicks Off with Featured Session on Reimagining Schools with Michael Crow, President of Arizona State University, and Beatriz Rendón, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Arizona State University

Washington D.C. – The Virtual National Charter Schools Conference (NCSCVirtual) begins today – the first of three days, July 16, July 23 and July 30, taking place entirely online. This year’s theme, Remote Learning, Reopening and Reimagining Schools is our most timely theme yet, bringing together industry experts to discuss distance learning, returning to school in the current health crisis, and leveraging the innovation of the charter school model to meet the tremendous needs of students and schools. The conference will have many of the great elements of the in-person event; keynotes, breakout sessions, homerooms, networking opportunities, and even an exhibit hall – the Virtual Solution Center – all from the comfort and safety of home.

Today’s featured session, “We are Only Limited by our Imaginations” – is a conversation with Michael Crow, president of Arizona State University (ASU) and Beatriz Rendón, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at ASU.

“There has never been a moment like the present for charter schools to show their stripes and demonstrate how a flexible and autonomous public school model can adapt quickly to meet the growing needs of students, their families, and communities at large,” said Nina Rees, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. “Reimagining schools and remote learning for the fall is going to take immense agency, creativity, and a commitment to keeping our eye on the prize. Charter schools were designed to foster and support public school innovation. We are thrilled to kick off this year’s Virtual National Charter Schools Conference and open the door for educators to prepare for the fall together.”

From educating students during the coronavirus pandemic to bracing for looming budget cuts and taking on the tough work of healing our nation’s deep racial wounds, this is a challenging time in public education. Crow and Rendón will discuss how innovative thinking in public education can create new opportunities for all students. They will also share lessons from the 11 charter schools under Arizona State University that can be leveraged by other school leaders to reimagine schools.
